I have a prized memory of visiting a friend here, must have been 1963 shortly after it was opened. He had a room on one of the upper floors and we went out through the full-height sliding window onto his balcony to add to the audience of an accomplished guitarist who was playing as if in a Shakespearean 'theatre in the round'. Unfortunately no students this day, so a bit dead, but the concept was brilliant. Having combed my memory, I had cycled from north London instead of sweating to catch the train….
