Hill End is an historic site in central New South Wales. Gold was discovered there in 1851 and by 1872, Hill End had 27 pubs, a brewery, 5 banks, a hospital, court house and police station, two newspapers and a population of gold miners well in excess of 8,000 people. Over 1.5 million ounces of gold were recovered from the site. One great find was the "Holterman Nugget" which tipped the scales at 286 kilos or about 631 pounds ands at the time was the world's largest gold nugget.
These days the town has only one pub, The Royal Hotel which was constructed in 1872. Fossickers still pan in the Turon and other creeks with some success.
