Wombats are muscular marsupials, short legged, burrowing quadrupeds and are mainly nocturnal. They are rather slow moving and this makes them very vulnerable when crossing busy country roads, particularly at night. Many are hit by motor vehicles and killed, often with a baby on board. On the occasions when the babies are rescued, many are handed to a volunteer wildlife care organisation known as WIRES.
Many volunteers knit pure merino wool puches that are then lined with flannelette. These pouches then become home to the baby wombats until they are fit enough and old enough to be released back into the wild.
This image is of a section of pouch, knitted in eight ply merino wool and destined for a local WIRES establishment.
