Awwe I'm stuck in boring old America... yawn. It's a pretty funny story actually; everyone else in my family absolutely despises the cure. So when they get around to Virginia, I'll have to sneak out of my house, pop round my friend's place for some of those clove cigarettes he has, then hitchhike to the show! to the guy that was wondering why women find robert attractive with his lipstick and makeup: i think robert is just sexy and adorable no matter what he wears and how many pounds he has. he has such a lovely smile and sparkling eyes, he seems intelligent, he's so charming. of course I don't know him but if he's anything like in his interviews, then he's absoltely hot.

I think each bandmember has their moments in pictures if they choose to smile or not. Simon looks fine to me in most of his pics w/ fans although I like it when he smiles... makes him even more handsome than he is!

I'm curious about the cross Simon is wearing these days--it appears to be a symetrical one that could be Celtic, doesn't look like the asymetrical Christian cross. After all he did give his son Eden a name that I believe is either Celtic or Saxon... That said I agree he doesn't look too thrilled to meet people often. He's been looking almost a little angry on stage at least since the Bloodflowers tour in 2000. Granted some people just look a bit tense or sad as they get older; I hope nothing in his personal life is bothering him as that look could indicate that...

MP TEE I think you will find in the case of the Cure and expectations, you may be wrong... They aren't always incredibly accessible (esp now that Perry and Roger are gone from the band), but in each of my times getting together with the band they have been VERY hospitable and friendly, and VERY down to earth. Even ROBERT, who is always mobbed by people, once you do get his attention or ear he converses with you and "seems" very much interested. He never seemed hurried or looking away, he seemed genuinely interested in meeting people and talking, making eye contact the whole way and talking as a friend, not an idol. Jason is quite shy, but pleasant, and Simon is actually a very fun guy to be around from what I have seen. Intimidating at first, yes, but once you get the chance to meet them they are fantastic, and the intimidation disappears immediately!

concerning meeting the band... i got ten feet from herr smith about ten years ago and it scared the hell outta me. he was so imposing, like an inner force made him larger then his name, fame and physical frame. i backed off and walked away.... and the cure are my fav band, hands down. so all this talk about what he smells like and how mary is so lucky is very odd to hear concidering my experience. anyone have a similat story or am i the only cure fan that has done this??? :>P

to informed: i understand exactly what you are saying, being a job is a job... and not in anyway would i shun the fact of someone doing their job... but like for instance... i don.t know if my experince was a flaw or not, but i was under the impression that his "bodyguard" at the time, with roger, was taking a picture of us. when later i found there to be no picture on my digital camera, it created questions. and all in all, it just made me realize that sometimes things aren.t what you see them as... if it was a mistake, because i don.t even know how to use my camera, or not, it was a discouraging experince. i personally, like so many get so disillusioned to the fact that if you do come across a bandmate of your favorite band, if music is what keeps you going... you don.t think twice about a bad experince, because you are just so excited... perhaps thats naive... i will never not like the cure. actually, i value their music more... but experinces like that can lead to someone just being a little less ethusiastic about the people or the buissness behind the music... :0 thankyou for taking the time to express yourself in regards to the opnions about bodyguards and all... cheeers!

the cure's security guy - "big brian" adsett for years, then an unfortunate incident in california which probably prohibits him from doing security in the US ever again - since the departure of darrell ives (starting with the bloodflowers promo shows... i saw him in LA and was all, "whoa. darrell ives is working for the cure. detroit rock city!" - who went to depeche mode right after the dream tour, then did one more supercross for clear channel, then retired from security for personal reasons, or so i've been told) has been michael oertel, whom darrell took out on dm's european exciter tour as venue security director (the guy who does the briefings with local security every day, usually ends up in the barricade). michael has been with the band since the trilogy show run. he does, in fact (being german) have an accent. he is not, in fact, an asshole. he's a professional personal and venue security director (some people call them "bodyguards". michael does much more than that.) when your principal (the person you are guarding) is idolized by so many (a lot of cure fans get WAY too up close and personal with robert, and robert usually is drunk enough that he won't tell them to go away, much less be able to defend himself if something bad were to happen - not meant as an insult to him... he's just not the right guy to defend himself), you tend to compensate by giving off a "stay away from him" vibe. michael is a wonderful person and a great security guy. his job is to keep the band (but more specifically robert) safe. that's why you'll get the cold shoulder from him. it's nothing personal. it does a lot to keep robert out of situations that he shouldn't be in.

Yeah, concerts are really awesome, everyone is just so nice, i met a guy named Doug at the Carson one. He was a really cool guy, i wish i can meet up with him again, and a lot of cool ladies too. Everyone is just really nice as well as the band members. I was upset, in Chula Vista i was backstage after and i left around 1:30-2:00, i forget, but i see this picture of where i was sitting, and theres Robert Smith. I saw Roger and Perry was getting a mausage.. jason met us but no pictures taken, i have like 40 pictures of The Cure if you guys want me to post them on here? and like 40 more of Interpol and Mogwai. If anyone likes growing bands, check out mine... we play in Orange County area at a bar called Hogue Barmichaels. People say we sound like The Cure and Smashing Pumpkins, weird.. but its Oct. 2nd and it starts at 7:00pm, e-mail me if you want to go... robertdugan@cox.net

maybe its just me but most of these pictures look like cardboard cutouts like some cheesy hollywood tourist thing or something. Just look at the edges around cure members, and some of the backgrounds dont match, compared to the fans to get an idea, or its a really lame camera.

Okay you morons, after reading all your Cure encounter stories, I was starting to feel a bit like a loser. Granted, I feel like a loser much of the time anyway, but that’s not the point. The point is, I am a bigger Cure fan than you could ever hope to be, and so it wasn’t fair that you were getting to meet him and I wasn’t. But now I have my own goofy “I met Robert Smith” story and even a picture to accompany. But there ain’t no way I’m posting that ugly picture of myself for the whole world to see, Yes, I’m vain. I’d never make it as a rock star, as I would veto all bad pictures of myself. But if you really want proof, you can e-mail me at Fleurdumal@earthlink.net. So yeah, I finally met him. He’s nice, blah blah blah. Actually, what really struck me was his sardonic wit. I like a bit of sacrasm in my rock stars. He graciously posed for pictures with us, even obliged with hugs when requested. No, I did not ask for a hug. I’m not the hugging type. Well, yes I am. But I don’t just go around asking for hugs from rock stars - even huggable ones. I did, however, ask him to sign my book - the one that he did not write. It’s a book of killer short stories by Fred Chappell, my former writing instructor. It was the book I read on the plane on the way over to the California shows, so now, with Robert’s autograph, it has even more symbolic weight. Or maybe less, considering your opinion of Robert Smith. What I can’t decipher though, is what he wrote before his actual signature. It either says “much love” or “motherf*cker.” I’m guessing the latter, since I had presumptuously told him he should be playing more Bloodflowers material on the Curiosa tour. BF is one of the Cure’s best albums, and if you disagree, you suck. It was extremely cool to meet Robert Smith. I wish I’d remembered to telll him how much I adored the new album, and to thank him for the absolute euphoria his music has given me over the years. I also wish that I’d remembered to give him the brilliant essay I’ve written linking the Cure to alll my favorite visual and literary artists. I can’t believe I forgot to do that. But then, I’m a loser, so there you have it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...Perry is highly underrated. He's an absolute doll and such a sweetheart. Anyone else noticing that the guys have all seemed to loosen up a bit as the tour has gone on? They were all (with the exception of Jason) pretty reserved in the earlier pics but have seemed to realize that we Americans don't bite. ;-P

Yes! I brought my digicam and was really close in the pit and got a few clips and pics! Robert was so adorable with his dancing! Some people had VIP passes -- wonder how they got that? Sniff But I'm happy just to be within a few feet from Robert, however short that was.

Ah, I thought you were going to Cali. Too bad. It would have been fun. I've already been to FOUR shows, as I am a Cure Geek: Atlanta (where I live), Nashville, Tampa, and Dallas. Two more in Cali and that's that. I wish the Cure would tour endlessly so I can just go to shows every weekend. How much more exciting would life be? Ah well...the dream always ends, he said. Anyhow, I hope I can get some yummy Robert pictures up here, with my arms around him (in the morning I cry). But realistically, I'll probably just get some shots of him from the pit. Hi this is milkgirl. I'm sorry but I'm not ready to share my pic yet...It's just my shy kiss on Robert's cheek and him smiling. I was very lucky to have won backstage passes from an online contest, this was in CA. When I flew to NYC to see them again I've waited for them in the rain and gave them our pictures. They put me on the list and I went backstage at Spy Club to hang out with them the next night! That was an awesome summer. ------How do others get to meet them? Regarding some of the postings relating to meeting the band, I actually did have the immense pleasure prior to the show in Camden. I don't profess to "know" any of them or what they would think about anything. My time with each of them was brief because there were about ten other fans that were also waiting. All I can say is that ALL of them were incredibly nice to me, friendly, polite and more than happy to sign autographs and take pictures. The best of all was when I introduced myself and my boyfriend to Robert and he shyly said “Hello, I’m Robert.” I couldn't help but laugh and say "I know who YOU are!" at which point he laughed as well. All of this is so absurd. Everyone deals with their fandom differently. Some people act like teens or are teens, others are more mature. Who cares as long as it is musical talent that is ultimately appreciated? I doubt people go see the Cure just because they are cute. They see them because they like their music. And often the appreciation for their music bleeds over into a physical attraction. BIG DEAL. The comments here have been racy but mostly contained. People like Robert's looks. So do I. But it's their damn music I appreciate first. I am obsessed with Cure music. But of course, I don't think people should get out of hand with their comments. Luvcat, milkgirl, Grace, you guys are awesome. I'm glad there are other Cure fans who feel the same way. I've met Cure fans (mostly younger fans) who are just obsessed with meeting them and are really loud and giggly and scream their brains out when they see them in concert, and I just can't relate to that at all. Even though I'm only 18, I've been a fan of theirs for a good seven or eight years, and whenever I've seen them live or just listened to their music or talked about them, I'm quiet and focused. I'm usually completely silent at their concerts. It's the best way to absorb the music, I think. And I know if I met them I'd probably clam up or get flustered too, and I wouldn't want that. I'd just love to have a discussion full of depth and meaning with them, and I too think it would be cool to have a meal with them. I think the best conversations often come at the dinner table. :) But I'm fairly sure that if given the chance, I would compliment them in how they have grown into wonderful human beings and how fortunate I feel to know that I've watched them grow and change. by the way, those houston pictures are great. simon's hat is cooool.

Glad to see Chyanne's posts. I guess cause I'm older and I never was a screaming teen I too wouldn't mind meeting the Cure but NOT in a crowded room full-of-fans setting. Sitting in on an interview or a meal with mutual friends/aquaintences (and possibly also their wives /significant others present) so we could have a REAL conversation. I for one would like to talk politics as Robert has spoken out about terrorism, the band has played many beneifits for orgs I support, things like that. Ah I'll just have to keep dreaming... That said I'm curious way way back the other Grace who identified as being Simon's relative wrote she didn't like the pictures...I don't see any that could look shocking to someone's family. We're talking about the Cure smiling with fans, not some old sleazebags like KISS pawing the groupies. Maybe Simon or someone else in the band did that sort of thing back when they were younger (let's be honest, lots of people in the entertainment industry do indulge when they are young); the Cure certainly don't seem to be doing it now!

(Since I won't have a lot of time to say what I want.) And, I can't come up with anything. This kind of shit keeps me up at night! I've just been thinking about something, and I just am curious to know if any of my fellow Cure fans feel the same way. I've come to the conclusion that if I was offered the chance to meet the guys and have my picture taken with them, I don't think I would accept. I would, however, prefer a meeting scenario with an interview of some kind, even though that's even less likely to happen than just meeting them. I don't know. Maybe I'm just not caught up or obsessed with the idea of meeting them. I guess I just don't need to talk to them to feel the effect they've had on my life, the guidance they've brought me. But I would be interested in hearing what they have to say in a serious conversation. But that's just me. Anyone else feel that way too? I still like looking at these pictures of them with fans. It kicks ass that they take time out to appreciate their fans. Not many bands do that. Roger and Simon seem especially cool and approachable. :)

As regards the makeup being darker, it's interesting... I remember him saying on the Edge 102 (Toronto station) interview pre-release of the album that MAC has supplied him with good lipstick that doesn't run, but he hasn't found a good eye makeup... then I see the new "panda" look and I actually think it may BE baseball black... it stays on through sweat, doesn't run or fade and looks the same at the end of a game/concert as it does going in. When I first saw it, I was pretty sure that's what it was, and to hear someone else say that's what it reminds them of is something of a clincher...

(Anything is possible if you're determined....not SCARY determined...but sweetly and nicely determined!).......I was invited to hang out with them for a heavenly short while. I must say, pictures show how gorgeous Robert is but when you meet him in person - its TEN fold! He's even MORE sexy handsome and gorgeous. Gracious, friendly and even a tad shy as well. Okay, . . . so I've had a few red wines tonight. I've read these comments for a few weeks now and finally have the nerve to write. Robert's make up (what little there is, really) is divine. It separates him from the masses. Do Cure Fans wish he'd look more like Jon Bon Jovi? Ugh! That's why we are alternative, people! C'mon, I live where fat people get the handicap ride-ons at Wal-Mart - not 'cause they're handicapped; but because they are just overweight. So, needless to say, I welcome the heavy eyeliner and a little escape from the everyday life. Since I saw the band members close up (God Bless you Andre' (in Tampa) and Roger (in Atlanta), I have intentionally deepened and darkened my own eye makeup. Actually, thinking about the below topic, maybe that is why Robert has been a little heavier than usual with the black eyeliner? For the same reason football players wear dark smudges under their eyes, the dark lines absorb the light that would normally bounce off of his fair skin, making the stage lights and the things he needs see a little more barable? Dark colors absorb light where light colors reflect. I often get "demon eyes" if someone does not have the "red eye" feature on cameras. (Nerd Alert: I watched too much "3-2-1 Contact" as a kid)

There has been a ton of rain in this area in the past 2 weeks. I live in eastern PA about 45 minutes from Camden and we had over 15 inches of rain in the 14 days prior to the show. The most direct route from the Western suburbs of Philly to Camden (Schulkyll Expressway) was closed for hours prior to the show due to mudslides thus making the drive even longer. The meet and greet was immediately prior to them taking the stage. Once I left the meet and greet and got to my seat, the band started. It's almost like we raced to see who could get to their spots first!

Was this meet and greet also a result that they couldn't really get to their hotel quickly? Word here in Western PA was that Camden that day/evening had torrential rain and major flooding...evactuations in some parts. Maybe they couldn't really get to the hotel immediately after so they hung out with fans hanging around???

Hello everyone, great pictures. I was at the Camden show lastnight, and was one of the pathetic ones' that waiting for 4hours after the show in hope to get a picture, or a sentence out to Robert Smith and the band. At about 2:30 in the morning, a security guard came over and just closed the gates, and we had to leave. I'm not sure why that happened, we were all chatting with the other security members there for most of the night, none of which seemed slightly annoyed. Regardless, my question is this... what can one do to get backstage!?! I know it's the hot question now, but I was just amazed at the number of "fans" at the afterparty last night. I'm assuming the majority of people are there through radio contests, record labels etc.. If no one can help with this, can anyone tell us their stories of success from waiting around after the show. I'm going to the Mass. show on Saturday, I'm crossing my fingers.

Could you Camden guys please share how you managed to meet the band? We asked around for meet and greet and info and no one had any. We tried to wait by the tour bus after the show, but an armed cop ordered to head in the opposite direction. Did you have special passes or were you just lucky? I want to know so I can meet The Cure next tour. Thanks.

I met Robert at the Nashville show...and sorry but I didnt take the opportunity to gather what he smelled like...lol. I'll leave it to the women to do the smelling. I did get to talk to him about his shiny black schecter guitar though.

Holy crap! Okay I swear, this is the last post about smelling Robert. I don't know why I didn't realize it... But he DOES smell like Mexican sweet breads...but mixed in with laundry detergent. I didn't want to be sniffing on him like a dog so I only smelled him once. Great, now whenever I'm at my grandmothers house I'll be thinking about Robert Smith. Ha! and I call myself a Mexican.

I've daydreamed about what Robert would smell like for YEARS. Thank you for answering that question. If I met Robert I would smell him and smell him and smell him. In fact, I'd ask him if I could smell him just so he wouldn't be confused about why I was sniffing. He'd probably say yes. He seems game for most anything like that. Of course, then I'd have to ask him if I could pinch his hiney... He'd probaby say no to that. Damn.

In terms of that questions "What does Robert smell like?"... When I figure out what it was he smelled like, I'll let you know. I'm still trying to figure that out myself, it isn't cologne though I know that much. Perhaps it was a mixture of laundry detergent and his own personal smell. Haha that sounded funny... None-the-less...he smelled goooooooooooooooood :)
