Until the late 1950s, you could find families and their associated animals sharing living space in houses carved into the rock at Matera (these people were called "Sassi", or rock-people). As you might imagine, drainage, light, and heat are all problems that would have had to be solved to make it liveable, therefore making it very strange and interesting to visit.
