Shots that really needed some help. The Photoshop edited images are on the left; originals on the right.
I've found one of the most useful tools in many of these rather damaged shots is the 'Autolevels' function, followed by a bit of tweaking to calm down some of the over-saturated colors. I probably could arrive at the finished state manually, but when there's so much to fix, autolevels gets you pretty close to where you need to be with just one click.
Some of these were really too far gone and probably should have been chucked back in the dumpster, but you just never know what's hiding underneath all that grime! (Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.)

I agree---Auto Levels is a wonderful tool. So is Auto Contrast and Auto Color Adjustment (or whatever it's called). I have used them all. Photo-editing software is one of mankind's greatest inventions.
