The following 7 subspecies are being recognized:
Ateles geoffroyi vellerosus - South-Mexico to Honduras and El Salvador;
Ateles geoffroyi yucatanensis - Mexico (Yucatan Peninsula), Northeast-Guatemala and Belize;
Ateles geoffroyi geoffroyi - Southeast-Nicaragua (Martina Bay to Lake Managua) to North-Costa Rica;
Ateles geoffroyi frontatus - West- and North-Nicaragua to Northwest-Costa Rica;
Ateles geoffroyi ornatus - Westcentral-Costa Rica and Panama east of the Canal zone;
Ateles geoffroyi azuerensis - Panama (mountains of Azuero Peninsula);
Ateles geoffroyi grisescens - Extreme Southeast-Panama and Northwest-Colombia.
