The following 4 subspecies are being recognized:
Probosciger aterrimus stenolophus - Yapen Island, North- and East-New Guinea;
Probosciger aterrimus goliath - West-Papuan islands, West-, Central- and Southeast-New Guinea;
Probosciger aterrimus aterrimus - Aru and Maroon Islands;
Probosciger aterrimus macgillivrayi - South-New Guinea, Cape York Peninsula (Northeast-Australia).
