The following 4 subspecies are being recognized:
Merops hirundineus chrysolaimus - Senegal to Central African Republic;
Merops hirundineus heuglini - Northeast-DR Congo, North-Uganda, South-Sudan and Southwest-Ethiopia;
Merops hirundineus furcatus - Southeast-DR Congo and Tanzania south to Zimbabwe and Mozambique;
Merops hirundineus hirundineus - Angola through Namibia and Botswana to North-South Africa.
