The following 3 subspecies are being recognized:
Eurypyga helias major - Guatemala to West-Ecuador;
Eurypyga helias meridionalis - Southcentral-Peru;
Eurypyga helias helias - Colombia to the Guianas south through Amazonian Brazil to East-Bolivia.
