The following 4 subspecies are being recognized:
Emberiza tahapisi arabica - South-Arabia;
Emberiza tahapisi septemstriata - East-Sudan through Eritrea and North-Ethiopia to Northwest-Somalia;
Emberiza tahapisi tahapisi - Central-Ethiopia to Southeast-South Africa, also South-Gabon, Angola, DR Congo and Socotra Island;
Emberiza tahapisi nivenorum - South-Angola to Central-Namibia.
