Widespread in tropical Africa.
The following subspecies are being recognised:
Ploceus bicolor bicolor - South Mozambique to East Transvaal, Natal and eastern Cape Province;
Ploceus bicolor tephronotus - Eastern Nigeria, south Cameroon, Gabon, Bioko Island;
Ploceus bicolor amaurocephalus - North Angola;
Ploceus bicolor mentalis - South Sudan (Imatong Hills) to northeast Zaïre, Uganda and West Kenya;
Ploceus bicolor kigomaensis - South Zaïre to Zambia and extreme West Tanzania;
Ploceus bicolor kersteni - Extreme south Somalia to coastal east Kenya and east Tanzania;
Ploceus bicolor stictifrons - Southeast Tanzania to East Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique;
Ploceus bicolor sylvanus - Northeast Zimbabwe and adjacent West Mozambique.
