The following 3 subspecies are being recognized:
Lagorchestes hirsutus hirsutus - Formerly West- and Central-Australia; extinct in the wild. Introduced to Trimouille Island;
Lagorchestes hirsutus bernieri - Bernier Island (Western Australia);
Lagorchestes hirsutus dorreae - Dorre Island (Western Australia).
