The following 4 subspecies are being recognized:
Halcyon malimbica malimbica - South-Cameroon and South-Sudan to Northwest-Tanzania and North-Angola;
Halcyon malimbica dryas - Príncipe Island and, at least formerly, São Tomé Island;
Halcyon malimbica forbesi - Sierra Leone to Nigeria and Southwest-Cameroon;
Halcyon malimbica torquata - Senegal to Southwest-Mali and North-Guinea.
