Great parts of Africa south of the Sahara (except Congo Bassin). Formerly Arabian Peninsular.

The following 4 subspecies are being recognized:
Struthio camelus syriacus - Formerly Syrian and Arabian Deserts. Extinct in 1966;
Struthio camelus camelus - Sahel of North-Africa and the Sudan;
Struthio camelus massaicus - South-Kenya and Central-Tanzania;
Struthio camelus australis - Southern Africa.
