The following 4 subspecies are being recognized:
Pipilo erythrophthalmus erythrophthalmus - Southcentral- and Southeast-Canada to Eastcentral-USA;
Pipilo erythrophthalmus canaster - Interior Southeast-USA;
Pipilo erythrophthalmus rileyi - Coastal Southeast-USA except Central- and South-Florida;
Pipilo erythrophthalmus alleni - Florida (Southeast-USA).
