Arctic Ocean and Baltic sea.
The following 5 subspecies are being recognized:
Pusa hispida hispida - Arctic coasts of Europe, Russia, Canada and Alaska;
Pusa hispida ochotensis - Kamchatka, Okhotsk Sea and Japanese Pacific coast;
Pusa hispida botnica - Baltic Sea;
Pusa hispida ladogensis - Lake Ladoga (Russia);
Pusa hispida saimensis - Lake Saimaa (Finland).
