The following 3 subspecies are being recognized:
Scythrops novaehollandiae fordi - Sulawesi, Banggai and Tukangbesi Islands;
Scythrops novaehollandiae novaehollandiae - North- and East-Australia. Winters to Moluccas and New Guinea;
Scythrops novaehollandiae schoddei - Bismarck Archipelago.
