Montane western North-America, from Rocky Mountains in Canada to South-California, Nevada and Arizona.

Spermophilus lateralis lateralis - Central-Wyoming, Colorado, North-Arizona and North-New Mexico;
Spermophilus lateralis wortmani - Southcentral-Wyoming to Northwest-Colorada;
Spermophilus lateralis arizonensis - Mountains in Central- and East-Arizona and Westcentral-New Mexico;
Spermophilus lateralis certus - Nevada (Great Basin, Mohave Desert, Spring and Charleston Mountains);
Spermophilus lateralis bernardinus - California (San Bernardino Mnt and San Gorgonio Peak);
Spermophilus lateralis mitratus - California (Yolla Bolla Mountain, Tehama, coastal North-California);
Spermophilus lateralis trinitatus - California (Trinity Mountains) to Southwest-Oregon;
Spermophilus lateralis chrysodeirus - Oregon to East-California;
Spermophilus lateralis castanurus - Utah, West-Wyoming and Southeast-Idaho;
Spermophilus lateralis cinerascens - Southcentral-Montana and Northwest-Wyoming (incl. Yellowstone);
Spermophilus lateralis trepidus - Southeast-Oregon, South-Idaho, North-Nevada and Northwest-Utah;
Spermophilus lateralis connectens - Northeast-Oregon and Southeast-Washington (Blue Mountains);
Spermophilus lateralis tescorum - Northern Rocky Mountains of Canada south to Central-Idaho (USA).
