The following 6 subspecies are being recognized:
Ammotragus lervia lervia - Mountains of Morocco, North-Algeria and North-Tunisia;
Ammotragus lervia ornata - Eastern and Western Desert of Egypt;
Ammotragus lervia blainei - Sudan, Northeast-Chad, Southeast-Libya;
Ammotragus lervia fassini - South-Tunisia and Libya;
Ammotragus lervia angusi - Aïr and Termit Massifs of Niger;
Ammotragus lervia sahariensis - South-Morocco and Mauritania to Sudan and Niger.
