East- and Southeast-Australia and Tasmania. Introduced to Southwest-Australia.

The following 2 subspecies are being recognized:
Trichoglossus moluccanus septentrionalis - Cape York Peninsula, Northeast-Queensland (Northeast-Australia);
Trichoglossus moluccanus moluccanus - Eastcentral-Queensland to South-Victoria, South-Australia and Tasmania.
