Nycticorax nycticorax nycticorax - Eurasia south to Indonesia, Africa and Madagascar;
Nycticorax nycticorax hoactli - South-Canada to North-Argentina and Chile;
Nycticorax nycticorax obscurus - North-Chile and North-Argentina to Tierra del Fuego;
Nycticorax nycticorax falklandicus - Falkland Islands.
