The following 9 subspecies are being recognized:
Orthotomus ruficeps cineraceus - Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Bangka and Belitung (east of South-Sumatra);
Orthotomus ruficeps germaini - South-Vietnam and Southeast-Cambodia;
Orthotomus ruficeps baeus - Nias and Pagai Island (west of North-Sumatra);
Orthotomus ruficeps concinnus - Siberut and Sipura (Mentawai Islands, west of Central-Sumatra);
Orthotomus ruficeps palliolatus - Karimunjawa (north of Northwest-Java) and Kangean Island (north of Bali);
Orthotomus ruficeps borneoensis - Borneo;
Orthotomus ruficeps cagayanensis - Mapun (Cagayan Sulu, far west of Philippines).
