Palearctic region. Winters to South-Asia and Africa.

The following 3 subspecies are being recognized:
Phylloscopus trochilus trochilus - West-Europe to South-Poland and Romania. Winters to West-Africa;
Phylloscopus trochilus acredula - Scandinavia to Siberia (Yenisey River). Winters to West-Africa;
Phylloscopus trochilus yakutensis - East-Siberia (Taymyr Peninsula to Anadyr River). Winters to South-Africa.
