Europe, North-Africa to West-China. Introduced in Argentina, Chile, Australia and New Zealand.
The following 13 subspecies are being recognized:
Cervus elaphus scoticus - United Kingdom and Ireland;
Cervus elaphus elaphus - Western Europe;
Cervus elaphus italicus - Bosco Mesola Nature Reserve, North-Italy;
Cervus elaphus hispanicus - Southwest-Spain and Portugal;
Cervus elaphus corsicanus - Corsica, Sardinia, South-Spain and Morocco;
Cervus elaphus barbarus - Morocco, Algeria and Tunesia;
Cervus elaphus pannoniensis - Carpathian basin in Hungary and Romania;
Cervus elaphus carpathicus - Ukrainian Carpathians;
Cervus elaphus maral - Crimea (South-Ukraine), Caucasica to North-Iran;
Cervus elaphus bactrianus - North-Afghanistan, Tadjikistan and Turkmenistan;
Cervus elaphus hanglu - Northeast-Pakistan and Northwest-India;
Cervus elaphus affinis - Himalayas, North-India to West-China;
Cervus elaphus sibiricus - South-Siberia to Northwest-Mongolia.
