The following 3 subspecies are being recognized:
Lalage nigra davisoni - Nicobar Island;
Lalage nigra striga - Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Nias, Bangka and Belitung, Java, Karimunjawa and Bali;
Lalage nigra nigra - Borneo and satellites and Philippines.
