The falls area changes at times when Otter Creek is low, especially when it's summer. A little island, accessible with only a little wading or even by steppingstones, appears in midstream. A side current turns into a trickling stream. A sort of beach appears, and children come to play there. Trees that have endured flooding take a deep breath and grow normally. And knowledgeable anglers come, aware that the big fish in that part of the river, including some massive brown trout, rely on the falls for cool, aerated water when the weather is hottest. Add various accessible historic remains and the Battell stone bridge above, and you have about as scenic a human-scale waterfall as there is.
