Quartz abounds in Vermont, thanks to igneous events in its geologic past, and larger pieces of white quartz are prized as doorstops, lawn ornaments, and specimens in rock gardens. If highway work exposes a rock face that includes a broken vein of white quartz, motorists will stop to look for chunks. More often white quartz remains embedded in other rock, where it can be admired but not removed--as in this boulder.
