There is a parody of Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land, This Land is My Land" that says "This land is my land/ This land ain't your land/ I've got a shotgun/ And you ain't got one/ If you don't get off/ I'll blow your head off/ This land is private property." Vermonters generally are not that extreme about property rights, but don't do things on people's land without permission. The other side of it is, landowners will often let people do things, like hunt or hike, if someone asks permission. Often the main concern is to know what's being done and who is doing it, and meeting face-to-face can allay those concerns. Sad to say, more and more land is seeing "Posted" signs appear every 100 feet (as required by law) because of littering, dumping, shooting of pets, dogs running deer, and other rotten behavior--certainly not all of it by out-of-staters.
