Phragmites--Wrong Way 10-11-09.jpg

Phragmites are indeed the wrong way to maintain marshland. Poorer as wildlife habitat than native cattails--and poorer from the point of view of foragers, who have used parts of cattails as food since Native American times--they are nevertheless successful in taking over from cattails wherever the two species contend. Vermont has identified them as one of the worst invasives the landscape faces.
