America

The steel drill barge America (sometimes also referred to as American) worked at dynamiting shoals when an explosion on board sank the vessel on Jun 20, 1932. She lies upside down, with the four bracing posts (retractable legs) which kept her anchored at a site, now helplessly aim upwards. Divers can view the twin props at 55' as well as the twin rudders. Under the wreck you can see winches, a brick oven or kiln, and a jumble of wire rigging. The deck cabin appears on the stern end, but inside is a tangled clutter of equipmenent. A small wooden barge which accompanied the America lies off her stern.
