"I’m a traveler. I’m lucky enough to have spent time in more than 30
countries spread out over four continents. But some of the most
interesting places I’ve been to are within a hundred miles of my home.
I'm attracted to abandonments. These buildings are filled with
incredible textures and light. Their past lives appear and reappear from
beneath peeling paint, rotting floors, and personal remains.
Once abandoned, the life spans of the buildings are relateively short.
In the two years I’ve been exploring abandonments, two-thirds of the
places I’ve visited have been sealed, demolished, or stripped and
refurbished for other purposes. I consider myself very fortunate to have
seen and documented them in their exceptional states of being.
Abandoned buildings have two lives, the present laid over the past, but
with gaps and tears, so we see what used to be, echoing through time.
When exploring them, I’m fascinated by the way I can see, touch, and
feel around me the ghosts of these buildings and their former
inhabitants. When I move through them I’m reminded that in a small way
I become a part of their life and that time, in these locations, moves
differently. These photographs are part of an ongoing series of
reflection on my role in the lives of these buildings."
