these pictures are examples of Cape Carts which are unique to South Africa [I think]. They were developed during the Boer War and are a safe way to hitch a pair to a 2-wheeled cart. The harnessing system is a bit different than the "normal" pair harness. this harnessing system enables a pair to safely pull a cart over the roughest country.

a nice design for a dog cart set up in the "cape" style
I was keen to know what a Cape Cart looked like. My mother used to talk about them a lot. Her father was a lighthouse keeper around the coast of South Africa from about 1913 to 1940 when he had a stroke. Their mode of transport was most of the time the Cape Cart when they lived a long way from civilization as at Cape L'Agulhas and Cape Point. It would take the her and her brother to the station for the train when they had to go back to school (they went to boarding school). It was also used to bring supplies for the families. (eg. Paraffin for the lamps in boxes from which they made furniture and other things. Sorry to be so long winded.
