Tallman Mt. State Park, NY 10/08/05

I was in the White Mountains of New Hampshire this weekend, and couldn't make this walk which was scheduled to be led by George Johanson. As it turned out, it rained (finally)heavily all weekend (and throughout the subsequent week) over the entire northeast of the United States. No one except George showed up for the walk, which is understandable given the weather conditions. Anyway, before leaving for NH I asked George keep a mental tally of what was found so I could put the information up on our web site. With his permission, this is his e-mail to me:

'Dianna,

I was the only one to show up at Tallman on Saturday and it didn't surprise me considering how adverse trhe conditions were. This kind of weather never stops me (only family obligations do) and I walked for over an hour in the pouring rain after I put my wallet in the car. I eschewed raingear except for boots and got soaked but it was warm enough that I felt so comfortable and at the same time so grateful for finally feeling and see lots of rain. I found some small hens but most oak trees there and elsewhere haven't produced this dry season. One notable exception was in another park and it was a big old oak and it had four hens in perfect shape but that was yesterday afternoon. I also found a nice giant puffball there. In Tallman I found only the usual suspects in general, the small hens, some chicken, honeys, and some small lepiotas in a sawdust pile in the parking lot where a nice fruiting of one of my favorite edible mushrooms -Lepiota anericana -sprouted two weeks ago. I doubt if there were any other gilled mushrooms to be found on Saturday, due to the lack of rain. I had a great time anyway and if anyone else had come they would have felt as I felt-so lucky to be alive and in a wonderful environment instead of a (gulp) mall.
GJ'

I decided it would be nice to display photos of the mushrooms George encountered over the weekend...
