George Johanson lead us on this spring walk. We found an assortment of Morchella semiliberas, some Morchella elatas, and several small Morchella esculentas. All were under or near Tulip Poplar trees. I couldn't help feeling that we just need an inch or two of rain and a couple of days of sunny weather to bring on a flush of the favored fungi. In addition to morels, we saw several circular clusters of Peziza. They were unlike any I had ever seen before in that they had a short lavender-colored stem; also, the outside lower portion of the fungus was purplish. When I broke the fragile flesh, it also was a lavender hue. The closest description I could find that seemed to match was of a Peziza violacea. However, it is supposed to fruit in burned areas and these specimens were in damp leaf litter with no apparent evidence of fire.
