Mianus River Walk, Connecticut

Carol Levine was our walk leader this day. A botany expert, Carol enriches our fung searches with information about the many native and alien plants that inhabit our woodlands. Today we were all treated to several glimpses of one of our most spectacular native orchids, the Pink Lady's Slipper. We also learned about once, twice and thrice cut ferns; about club mosses and unusual sedges. As for mushrooms, it was a very good day - not for edibles, but for the variety of species found. Some of the fungi included Pluteus cervinus, Megacollybia platyphylla, Schizophyllum commune, Polyporus squamosus, Tyromyces chionius, Stereum ostrea, Auricularia auricula, Clavicorona pyxidata, Xerula radicata, and Laetiporus sulphuerus. There were also a number of myxomycetes including Lycogala epidendrum, Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa, Fuligo septica and Stemonitis sp. For Ascomycetes we found Peziza badio-confusa, Apiosporina morbosum, Xylaria polymorpha and Ustulina deusta.
