July's Finds

This month started off with an informative program on DVD created by photographer Taylor Lockwood on emphasizing the need to learn to identify the poisonous mushrooms. This program is geared to beginners, parents, schools and medical personnel and can be purchased from Taylor at http://www.taylorlockwood.com/.
Our first walk of the month was a new venue led by new member Dawn Ladd. After seeing the photos of mushrooms found at Dawn’s Rheinbeck location by visitors Steven Gordon and Daniel Pilloff, I was feeling envious and regretful that I was away for the fourth of July weekend and unable to attend. From the feedback I am getting about this walk, this was clearly a very successful hunting experience and a location that we should regularly return to in the future. Thank you Dawn! Among the finds were the following: Psathyrella rugocephela (Corrugated-cap Psathyrella), Clitocybe gibba, the yellow Cyptorama asprata, Cantharellus cinnabarinus, Craterellus cornucopioides, Cortinarius alboviolaceus, Russula silvicola, Amanita rubescens, Amanita flavoconia, Crucibulum laeve, Xylaria polymorpha, Strobilomyces floccopus, Clavulina amethystina, Ramaria formosa; Clavulina cristata, Clavulinospsis fusiformis, Leotia lubrica, Arcyria denudata, Ceratiomyxa frutioculosa, Leptonia serrulata, Pluteus cervinus, Gymnopus subnudus, Galiella rufa, Microstoma floccosa, Hygrocybe flavescens, Tremella mesenterica.

Mushrooms added to our July list from findings at Sylvan Glen and Fahnestock State Park include the following: Russula compacta, Russula vinacea, Lactarius hygrophoroides, Lactarius luteolus, Lactarius piperatus, Cantharellus minor, Amanita brunnescens, Amanitia peckiana or volvata, Cortinarius iodes, Marasmius nigrodiscus, Dacrymyces palmatus, Phallogaster saccatus, Leotia lubrica, Hypomyces luteovirens. Collections from the Westmoreland Walk of July 11th included
Lycogala epidendrum, Parasola plicatilis, Calocera cornea, Fuligo septica, Xerula furfuracea, Schizophyllum commune, Cantharellus minor and Cantharellus cinnabarinus; Lactarius hygrophoroides; Amanita flavoconia, Agaricus placomyces; Leotia lubrica, Coltricia cinnamonea, Tylopilus felleus; Russula sp., Hydnum repandum.
