This was the find of the day for me! At first we thought it was a Peziza badioconfusa, until we noticed that it was 'deformed' and there were lots along the trail that were equally strange. I thought it might be a Discina - Discina perlata since the bumps in the middle of each cup looked 'pearl-like.' However, after I returned home and did more research I had to conclude that what we found was not a Discina (which is related to the Gyromitas or False Morels), but instead was the very similar-looking Disciotis venosa. The reason I came to this conclusion is that Disciotis venosa grows under deciduous trees (where these grew) whereas Discina perlata grows under conifers. Also, the lavender we observed underneath each specimen is more typical of some young Peziza fruiting bodies. Disciotis venosa is in the Peziza family. ANyway, I am very happy that we found a fungus new to me!
