Westchester Wilderness Trail. Pound Ridge

This is one species of several 'Honey Mushrooms,' named for their honey-color. They are edible when cooked. The Honey mushroom is an aggressive parasite that is resonsible for much forest damage. You can often see its thick, black rhizomorphs hugging the surface of logs beneath the bark. The largest mushroom in the world is the mycelium of a Honey mushroom, the Ringless Honey, Armillaria tabescens. It is located in the Malheur National Forest in eastern Oregon. It is believed to cover 2,200 acres and is 3.5 miles across. The giant mushroom is at least 2,400 years old, but some experts estimate it could could be 7,200 years old.
