Hygrophorus-virgineus8895.jpg

Fahnestock State Park, NY

This lovely white mushroom has been appearing lately in many places. It almost looks like a Clitocybe or a white Cantharellus. However its gills are waxy. It differs from another white waxy cap, Hygrophorous eburneus, in being somewhat smaller and in having a dry rather than a viscid cap and stalk. Hygrophorous virgineus grows in small groups in mixed woods in leaf litter.
