5/06/06 Tallman Mt. State Park, Piermont, NY

What a gorgeous day! And what a huge group! Paula counted 30 people who showed up to join us on this walk led by George. I think the hope of finding morels may have had something to do with the extraordinary turnout! And we did find some - not many, but enough to at least learn to recognize what a Yellow Morel looks like - and a Half-free Morel. We also found several fruitings of Peziza badio-confusa, an Ascomycete that is in fact edible, although I don't think anyone collected it for that purpose. We saw several specimens of a terrestrial Basidiomycete commonly found at this time of year, the Spring Entoloma, Nolanea verna. It is poisonous. The edible Psathyrella candolleana was also in evidence. And Dave picked the first Pleuteus cervinus of the season. The most unexpected discovery was a pristine specimen of the very delicious Hericium americanum (ramosum) fruiting on the underside of a fallen beech tree!
