08 08-12 07 NEMF, Orono, Maine

In 2007 the Northeast Mycological Federation, or NEMF (www.nemf.org) held their annual gathering at Orono on the Campus of the University of Maine. Maine Mycological Society severed as host of this successful event. Owing to the dry weather, attendees from the eastern states were unable to gather a record number of species, but some unusual fungi were collected and given the attention they rarely get. There was lots more beyond the walks and the fungi count to occupy our interest. Many of us attended informative workshops and presentations on subjects as diverse as phylogeny of fungi; fungal microscopy; researching amanitas on the internet; ascomycetes; boletes; fungal pathogens; tricholomas and more. There was also a skit called 'TOADSTOOLS', written by Gary Lincoff, and performed by the author and a few of us to entertain everyone on the final evening after the banquet. Perhaps the highlight of the entire event was the 'Roast of Mushroom Guru Sam Ristich', were everyone who knew Sam from the early years to the present told funny stories that revealed his generosity, intellect and enthusuasm for spreading his love of nature to all who ever had contact with him.

Below you will find photos of some of the events and fungi recorded. As for the fungi photos, I chose those that many of us, including myself, are not very familiar with. Tke some time to research these and expand your knowledge and appreciation of some confusing or often overlooked species.
