06 11 06 Westchester Wilderness Walk

We had a perfect day weather-wise to take a fungi walk in this gorgeously well-kept preserve. Our walk leader was Roger Willson whose property is adjacent to these pristine woodlands. We found quite a variety of fungi and some Myxomycetes. I have not been able as yet to identify all of our finds, in particular, the species of fungi that was flourishing in the wood chips at the entrance to the preserve. I thought they might be Agrocybes, but but was not able to find a description that coincides with the characteristics of these specimens. Rena Wertzer thought they might be Psilocybes, which I considered after seeing the blue-green reaction on the stipe to bruising. But believing they appeared primarily on dung rather than wood chips, I felt we probably had Agrocybes of some sort. At the meeting last night with guest speaker Gary Lincoff, Rena's insight was confirmed by the author of the "Audubon Guide to Mushrooms of North America!"
You will notice that we have a couple of sporeprints contributed by COMA's official Mr. Sporeprint, Al Turri. Thanks Al!

Boletes: Xerocamus (Boletus) chrysenteron, Gyrodon merulioides
Polypores: Ganoderma applanatum, Phellinus gilvus, Polyporus varius, Trametes versicolor, Trichaptum biforme
Jellies:Tremella mesenterica, Auricularia auricula, Calocera cornea
