Rostov Veliky (or Rostov the Great) is located on the shores of Lake Nero, 200 Km from Moscow. It was fist mentioned in 862 in the Primary Chronicles. It was incorporated into the state by Rurik. The population is 35,000.
Rostov Kremlin is in the center of the city. It was built 1670-1683. The Eparchy was moved to Yaroslavl in the late 18th century after which it fell into disrepair. In 1883 a merchants group established a museum of the church. In 1918 it became state property and remains state property today despite calls for it to be turned over to the church.
