Myshkin, or "Mouseville," is a small town of 5,900 people that sits on the banks of the Volga River. Its location gave it success for trade as well as fishing. Today, it takes advantage of its name for tourism.
The story goes that it gets its name from Russian Prince Fyodor Mikhailovich Mstislavsky who was travelling through the area. While taking a nap he was disturbed by a mouse running over his face. At first he was furious that the creature disturbed him, and them realized that it seemed to be warning him. At that he noticed a couple of vipers coming towards him which he quickly dispatched of with his mace. In thanks he ordered a protection for the mice of the area.
The town was known for its industries, including a special type of footwear style called "Valenki". The town boasts a museum of Valenki, as well as museums for flax production, weaving, and milling.
One of the key features is to visit the "Mouse Palace." Mice like cheese and this place is very cheesy.
