Thanks, Beth. Awesome display; north american patriotism brings moisties to my eyes, as I play in my head, and their words, your anthem and mine. It's a horrific wake-up time, with WMD's like Saddam himself being deposed (you found illegal pipeline to Iran for oil - proving he would have had access to 'mass money', meaning he could have contrived IC missiles over time, or some other delivery method like high altitude plane-drop, undetected sub-launch - all he needed was masses of money - and your forces proved containment didn't work - as the money WAS being amassed very illegally - to me, the WMD's was money matched with zealot criminal dictator, with Odai and Kusai ready to fill-in when dad was too old); what Uncle Sam did was absolutely RIGHT ... and intelligent humankind around the world are wet-eyedly appreciative of Unc. Sam looking after this teeny tiny planet and our butts upon it; our prime minister of the time screwed-up HUGELY (glad he's gone), but rest assured, canadians themselves (the people) would have as they always have in the past jumped aboard the haywagon with you to go and clean house and kick some Hitler/Hussein ass. Atheist or I'd say god bless, so I'll say thank you and let America prosper in health and happiness forever more as our best bud and biggest trading partner!

No Beth, That will not make me happy at all. The right you have to express your feelings is the same right I have to respectfully disagree. We would indeed be in trouble without that. It seems though that nothing, with the exception of politics, can inflame passions quite like an impending war. Peoples comfort zones are challenged very easily.

Ken, I can foresee the day when I will get an email message from an official of our government telling me that I must take this gallery down. I'm sure that will make you and Andrew happy. Unfortunately, it will remove one of the freedoms that you so passionately remind us many Americans have died for! Please don't presume that you understand what anyone other than yourself feels about our country. Patriotism is not one dimensional or signified by a flag alone. You diminish your patriotism and mine when you villify people who express their love of country in ways other than yours.

Ok people, are you all on crack? As I strongly agree that it is sad that it took something so catostrophic to bring out patriotism in America, how can you sleep at night having actually taken time out of your day to bash our National symbol? Do you not realize the millions of lives that have been lost in battles to secure the very freedom you are using to mock everything this country stands for? The REAL sad thing is that there are people out there that obviously just do not give a shit about what happened on 9-11-01 and can still feel good about themselves after coming to a site like this and defacing (for lack of a better term) the country that they live in and still protects them, even thought they feel this way. It is sad that there are more people that have posted saying bad things about America and our flag than have people saying good things, such as Andrew and myself. The flag is a symbol of what we stand for, what we believe in, and who we are. How did you expect our nation to react after such a brutal attack on innocent life? Are we supposed to just sit back "peacefully," as you call it, and wait for something of this nature to happen again? In almost every religion, Christian, Muslim, Catholic, or almost any other, the killing of innocent people is wrong. This is not an issue of who God is or if he/she exist, this is an issue of right and wrong. If this massacre goes without a response, it will only lead to a similar one in the future. The responsible party must be punished for their actions rather than fueled by people such as yourselves who either just don't give a damn or are on their side.

I love the flag...always have! It is a beautiful thing. What would be even more beautiful if the world learned the true meaning of tolerance. We must learn to live together and respect our differences. Bush and his war on terrorists is way off base. We need peace. We need for picture to document their feelings like you have done. I hardly know what to say, but think that Barbara Kingsolver says it better than I ever could, "Patriotism seems to be falling to whoever claims it loudest, and we're left struggling to find a definition in a clamor of reaction. This is what I'm hearing: Patriotism opposes the lone representative of democracy who was brave enough to vote her conscience instead of following an angry mob. (Several others have confessed they wanted to vote the same way, but chickened out.) Patriotism threatens free speech with death. It is infuriated by thoughtful hesitation, constructive criticism of our leaders and pleas for peace. It despises people of foreign birth who've spent years learning our culture and contributing their talents to our economy. It has specifically blamed homosexuals, feminists and the American Civil Liberties Union. In other words, the American flag stands for intimidation, censorship, violence, bigotry, sexism, homophobia, and shoving the Constitution through a paper shredder? Who are we calling terrorists here? Outsiders can destroy airplanes and buildings, but it is only we, the people, who have the power to demolish our own ideals." Sadly, Beth

Great work. Actually I don't think you're in such a minority as some seem to think. This is wearing thin and lots of folks I know are beginning to question all the new limitations on democracy supposedly justified by a phony 'war on terrorism.' 9.11 was bad enough, but opportunist using it to take away rights is just as bad.

Beth - What fabulous work. I was actually ordered to display a flag at the Child Care Center post 9/11 by my Boss. Then while driving to the United Way meeting, I saw a small red car with the Vanity Plate of "Muslim" The flag thjat was hanging off the car was bigger than the Escort, and there were multiple flag stickers and patriotic phrases (ie God Bless America, anti terroism slogans) painted on the car. I thought what a strange sad thing that this citizen has to display this, as he clearly feels unsafe. What irony that we are against Terrorism, but perfectly content to paint slogans such as "God Forgive you ...We Won't" on their cars. How small our view has become. How nice for us all that we are so in the Right again.

This is an interesting motif and well documented. I think in a few years it will be even more interesting as a sort of historical snapshot. Good work.
