First Leg: Portland, Maine waiting in the bus line! |
Tony meets us at South Station....Thanks, Tony!! |
It's nice having a few minutes to talk to an old friend! |
That station is beautiful, but this is... |
the Executive Lounge and we don't feel like executives!! |
Just to underline that this is South Station! |
But we're treated to it anyway. |
Then it's on to Albany where the station is new and...(sorry this is cock-eyed!). |
 ....interesting! |
Approaching by bus you get to see the outside. |
 And Albany from inside. |
Second Leg: We're on the Amtrak on our way to Chicago....it's not a bad SMALL space. |
And here's Albany from the train. |
The next day: Somewhere east of Chicago |
....there are roads to nowhere... |
 ....sweet dreams and.... |
...farm equipment meant for 'dairyland;' |
 and high power lines... |
 ...in every direction! |
Chicago is high roller land? |
 And then approaching Chicago... |
we start seeing boats and... |
 ...commuter trains.... |
 |
Finally we're THERE and in the train station and down the street; nearby... |
...we grab breakfast at Mitchell's where Milk Duds are a trademark. |
 One satisfied... |
 breakfaster! |
And why shouldn't he be with FOUR eggs over corned beef hash? |
Then we head outside & back to the station; with a view of the Sears Building, but nary a terrorist in sight! |
 It's a beautiful station! |
 |
 Yup, it is! |
Done only as they knew how back in the day when.... |
...government money was thought to represent virtue and the common good! |
Ron checks out the schedule board. |
 It's a big, towering place befitting... |
...the symbol of the US of Ahhhhhhhh! |
Some people use it as a place to rest. |
Stairs are worn by decades of feet! |
This way to the trains... |
....and just in time for... |
...the Metro Lounge...Chicago's answer to Boston's Executive Lounge! |
Leg Three: We leave Chicago, but not before... |
 ....we get to.... |
....look back at the city and.... |
 ....the Sears Tower! |
 |
Approaching Milwaukee we find ourselves under a bridge! |
Leg Four: West of Chicago we see... |
 ....farm field after... |
....farm field....on and on and on! But there ARE lots of birds in the wet swails produced by spring rains. |

Leaving the train at Minot... |
 ....where Ron... |
spends his coins on water or some other such thirst-quencher and... |
....get golden dollars in change for his $5.00 deposit. |
Then it's time to catch the train again. |
On the way out the door, "When Women Rule" catches Ron's eye and opens his mouth! |
Then going through North Dakota, the topography changes from.... |
 flat to hilly with... |
 ....interesting clouds. |
Ron finally gets his camera going! |
The further west we go, the more 'auto graveyards' we see! |
And those country boys fill their time with graffitti on trains. |
In Big Sky country we find... |
...beautiful cloud formations; they stretch from horizon to horizon! |
We pass Fort Union where it appears that the Indians were neighbors. What makes me think this wasn't true? |
The Missouri River is large here. |
And the topography changes again for a time. |
 |
With oil prices so high, even small wildcatters are at it again! |
After lunch we go to the... |
...Observation Car cause our window is .... |
....filthy and we can see.... |
....so much more from these windows! |
 It's a party!! |
 The terrain undulates into... |
 .....soft hills. |
Old vehicles are left in the vastness to die and decay. |
Then the countryside turns flat again. |
 Grain elevators... |
 ....punctuate the countryside. |
This one was particularly pretty in late afternoon light. |
At Havre, Montana, we get off the train again.... |
...to investigate an old steam engine. |
Ron has his camera going! |
It's a perfect stop for Dads and their... |
 ....little sons. |
 Ron's still taking photos. |
Back on the train, the sky turns lovely! |
And in the distance we see the Bear Paw Mountains where Chief Joseph surrendered to the US Cavalry. |
 Farms, farms, everywhere.... |
 |
 ....and lovely clouds!! |
Then we see rain approaching. The sky is so big and wide that you can... |
...see it coming from miles away!! |
Abandoned farms also appear here and.... |
 ...there. |
More grain elevators....this one with a fire escape! |
Lovely scenery makes Montana BIG Sky Country! |
Matching, HIS and HERS priveys! |
 And more grain storage. |
 The Lewis and Clark.... |
....Monument sits on the Blackfeet Indian... |
....reservation. Explorers who beat the path for the White man ....and woman. |
 Then in a distance....MOUNTAINS!!! Glacier!!! |
But in another direction, it's still pretty flat. |
As we get closer, we realize that they still have snow in places. |
And I guess you can understand why!! |
One of the famous lodges with it's mountain backdrop....drop dead gorgeous! |
....even though there's still snow. |
These are all shot from the train. |
We see LOTS of mountains, but the dark and movement make it hard to shoot. |
