MOUNTAIN FLOWER: I'm struck by the bravery of a Mountain Flower, Whipped by wind for hour on hour, Scorched by heat and frozen with cold, Clinging to places where there seems no hold. Head up boldly, round the clock, Finding life in a barren rock. In the midst of adversity, beauty rare For those who look, for those who care. Many such flowers live and die And are never seen by a human eye At least not closely, on hands and knees Reverently there, midst the rocks and trees. Today I saw a Mountain Flower And I stopped and enjoyed for over an hour. The dainty flower, the rugged rock, And the rushing river combined to mock The minor works of pompous man, Though try as he might, and boast as he can, For all his art, his skill, his power He's yet to match a Mountain Flower. ------------------- Anderson Sometime in the '70s
