June 11: We leave for Boston...Tobin Bridge and |
We meet Tony Kaliton at South Station, then ... |
...slowly work our way through the suburbs out of Boston. |
The Room is cramped, but not bad. |
We're happy to be on our way. |
We leave Albany around dusk or a little before. |
June 12: Lake Erie is pretty in morning's early light. |
Along the way, old stations are amazingly gorgeous in their decay. |
Old farms dot the fields. |
And crop tracks lead across wide fields! |
 First impressions of... |
 Chicago are NOT |
 ...good! |
Our first view of the 'Sears Tower!' (A bit of Ron's humor.) |
But downtown is considerably prettier! |
at noon with people on the streets....oops! Can't see any here. |
 Amtrak waits below ground. |
Train travel is exhausting work! |
Now for the REAL Sears Tower....God shines his light on her...at least here. |
But don't let your guard down! There are terrorists around every corner! Immigration policy demands it! |
We leave Chicago in the mid-day on the 12th. |
Farm workers toil outside the city. |
 Approaching Milwaukee |
 There's construction in Milwaukee. |
In LaCrosse, Wisconsin, the train stops and I get out to 'shoot.' |
Leaving the upper mid-west, the La Crosse River is gorgeous at sunset. |
We lose 3 hours overnight to engine trouble, so get to see.. |
...some territory we've slept through on other trips. |
Old buildings abound ....as do birds, but they are too fast and we're moving making it hard to capture them! |
But there's plenty of water from a wet spring for the ducks that are everywhere! |
And then in the middle of farm country somewhere in North Dakota, THIS appears! |
Through ND and Eastern Montana these farm roads stretch to the horizon through vast, flat land! |
Then in Western ND, these formations give our eyes a rest from FLAT! |
Dusk and the MOUNTAINS appear across this vast flatness! |
As the sun sets, the hills become luminous! |
For Lynne: Yes, there ARE horses here...for dogfood or rodeo? Who knows! A coral-full! Sorry for the jiggle! |
And then in BIG SKY country, a storm approaches from far away! |
They don't call it BIG SKY country for nothing! |
The curtain falls and lights from a small town below jump with the train's movement! Kind of interesting! |
June 14: Getting ready for our first day in Montana. Check for the best map and guide. |
Our hotel: Best Western Rocky Mt. Inn |
Then we drive by the Flathead Lake, largest this side of the Mississippi....so they say. Gorgeous! Photos nor words do justice! |
We visit the Peoples' Center...Museum of the Native Peoples of the area. |
The lobby is a symbolic round space. |
The Mission Mountains are along our way. |
Then we stop at the Bison Range where there is wildlife on acres of land with views.... |
(We need to find out why these are here.) |
 Like this and... |
 ....this! |
Ain't it GORGEOUS...gives the word new meaning. |
 |
Here's some of the wildlife...we get really close to this female and... |
...then fairly close to this male prong horn antelope. |
Going home the lake is still gorgeous and we haven't done it justice yet! |
Even Ron gets out to take photos. |
Each Morning we stop at Sunrise Bakery for our morning coffee/tea and donuts. |
They have a good sense of humor. |
June 15: It's Glacier National Park day...first visit to the park where a good ... |
...half of the main road isn't open, but we get... |
 ...these despite this drawback! |
What a gorgeous place! That word again! |
This lake (McDonald) is over a mile deep! |
Cairns give an excuse to shoot down-lake. |
And McDonald Lodge, one of the old log lodges.... |
 ....is amazing as well. |
And here's the outside of this lovely lodge. |
These buses are propane fueled and wonderful old vehicles, transport for tourists. |
We leave the lodge and head up 'Going to the Sun Road' to find fast water on the Flathead. |
 |
Then we make our last stop at Apgar where people are preparing... |
...to go boating with a drop dead gorgeous view! |
Yes, I am here too! (Ron shot this one.) |
June 16: We do a 'round-about' to get to the other side of the park, racing to beat the rain. |
We drive along the Flathead River and on back roads that we've never travelled before. |
Trying to reach St. Mary's Lake before the rain. |
We get there to take this and just as we're leaving it starts! |
Then we stop at the lodge. |
Going back over the Mts. out of the park, the clouds part and we drive through an old forest fire site. |
Which makes for a lovely mix! |
Sometimes I'm not sure if I like this weather or sun better. |
 Ron shoots some flowers. |
Then up the valley the rain has disappeared... |
...temporarily, but clouds still hang low. |
Aspens are very pretty trees...in the birch family, I think. |
And it is spring, so there are lots of wildflowers. |
And approaching the Blackfeet Reservation, we see these lodge poles ready for teepee building! |
June 17: It's back to Lake McDonald and the Apgar Site on a cloudy morning! |
Ron gets into the act shooting photos too. |
And he shot this one. Lovely! |
The stones are pink and green here. |
Then we head back to McDonald Lodge where the lanterns are of Native American design and... |
....spring flowers bloom in the garden. |
Wildflowers grow on the grounds too...these ladyslippers LOOK like lady slippers! |
McDonald's diningroom must have a fire going. I see smoke coming from the chimney. |
It's a wet morning and not very warm. It was in the 30's when we drove up the mountain! Yikes! Too cold! |
The gift shop sells these and would scare the wits out of anyone wanting to walk in the woods! |
As would this....a stuffed wolf at the Trading post. |
We stopped at a Trading Post on the way home with all kinds of .... |
....Native American art. This man is admiring a blue butterfly...symbolic for the Indians. |
Cowgirls try on hats at the Trading Post. |
 Ron selects post cards...again! |
June 18: Breakfast in the hotel then on to... |
...Whitefish in the rain to explore. |
This is a typical western town... |
...with western props to lure people in. |
Signs like this remind us of the wild west....as they probably are meant to. |
A little humor here....looks like Abu Graib has gotten into their blood! |
Wall murals highlight the art and poetry of students while celebrating... |
 ....local heroes. Wonderful! |
 Western doors |
We have lunch at the Red Caboose. |
Old poster decorate the entrance...visions of buffalo hunts from trains here! (White hunts...NOT Indian hunts!) |
Then find this outside a ceramics shop. Guess there are other Maggie dogs in this world!?? |
Typical street w/ mountain backdrop. |
Then it's back to Apgar in the rain where bikers are headed out despite the weather. |
Between the showers, it stops long enough to 'shoot.' |
Last stop, gift shops selling local products. Huckleberries and cherries are BIG! |
June 19: We take a tour with Native Ed-Ventures and visit the Tribal Council Building. |
A court room in the building. |
Campus scene at the college. |
Floor tiles in the Art Department Building |
Views from the car of the mountains. |
Mary Jane is our guide. |
St. Ignatius is on the National Register and a glorious church located... |
....on the Reservation. These murals were painted by the mission's cook! |
It is heartening to see that Native culture is represented on the alter and... |
 ....here. |
Mary Jane looks at displays at the mission.... |
...and asks for a photo of these beaded mocassins. |
Mary Jane shows us a waterfall on the mountainside! |
After our tour, we go to the Bison Reserve again and this time are treated to bison... |
 ....here, there and .... |
....everywhere as they cross the road in front of and behind us! |
 Keep Going, Big Fella! |
The Reserve is very large and the views amazing! |
 Babies and all. |
Views from the Reserve are beautiful and.... |
 Wildflowers grow everywhere! |
Same view taken with small camera. |
 Pronghorn antelopes are plentiful. |
Yup, shedded antlers collected from the grounds. |
And on the way home we stop to try to capture Flathead Lake...CAN'T do it! |
June 20: We return to Glacier where it gets increasingly... |
...difficult to find new subjects....red buses. |
This stream flows beside the inn into the lake. |
 Ron |
Butterflies have now joined the flora and fauna. |
People check in to the old Inn |
Rockers in front of the humongous fireplace. |
And this window has old, hand-blown glass...can you see it? Probably not. |
Out front, there a totem. |
Up the road, the water is calm in a stagnant pool. |
And we find another butterfly...or is it a moth? |
I'd never seen cowslips...the bears like these we are told! |
And the stream and mountains are beautiful... |
 ...in all their.... |
 ....variety. |
With waterfalls here and there. |
Indian Paintbrushes...very different from eastern ones! |
 ...Closer still. |
Down the road, kids are skipping stones. |
 |
And Apgar is a wonderful last stop! |
First Day of Spring: Last day in Whitefish so we head back to the park to capture.... |
 ....bear grass and... |
 ....bear warnings! I didn't go a step further! |
Young maple leaves with red fungus. |
Wonder what bird this tree houses??? |
Tame mule deer crosses our path and .... |
...eats in a leisurely fashion right beside the car! |
 Wildflowers |
 Canadian Visitors' Center houses.... |
....this Rex from Dino Country! |
"My, What BIG teeth you have!" |
We sit on the tracks waiting to leave for Portland with this warehouse out the window. |
June 22: We visit Ron and Jordan. |
Out for a walk to dinner in one of their 'neighborhoods.' |
 Their kitchen. |
Chyna, the best cat in the world! |
 Ron peeking from diningroom. |
June 23: We head out for the Portland Market Day. |
An Sunday Market in the streets of downtown Portland. |
 It's populated by characters. |
 Balloon man. |
 One-armed street musician. |
 Biker |
 Cowboy |
 Athlete |
 Uncle Sam? |
 Photographer |
 Jimmy Hendrix???? |
 'Jimmy' and Kids |
 Wired, hungry Santa? |
 Palm Reader....bad news? |
 Jordan's Mom...try that hat! |
 Baskets for sale. |
 Jordan and her Mom. |
 Street Fair Reflections |
Kids come on their scooters. |
Leaving the market, musicians are arriving. |
 And Chinatown is colorful! |
June 24: Jordan searches the net....or something. |
 Ron and Jordan |
 Cheryl and Maeple....bacon...YUMMMMMM! |
Center of attention: Ron, Tim and Cheryl w/ Maeple |
 Who's there? |
Lunch with Prudy and Paul. |
Prudy and Paul...Happy Anniversary and Retirement! |
 Ron and Jordan |
Later, the backyard is Maeple's playground and... |
 ...she loves the water! |
She's a very gracious hostess (as is her 'mother'). |
June 25: We go to Powell's Bookstore and spend a morning on five floors of new and used books! |
Then grab a snack in their coffee shop where people eat and read. |
Later we visit Lowe's to find... |
.....a housewarming gift for Ron and Jordan. |
Tieing it into the trunk to get it home takes three! |
Then the two Ron's set it up in the backyard. |
June 26: Last day and we go out to eat at the kennedy School.... |
...an old school converted to a restaurant, meeting rooms, hotel and entertainment complex. |
June 27: The last day is quiet with time to sun in the backyard and.... |
 ....clean Maeple's 'lake.' |
Then she enjoys playing with the hose as... |
 ....her pool is.... |
 ....refilled. |
June 27: Mt. St. Helene's from the bus window. |
And Columbia Gorge from same. |
One last glimpse of Glacier National Park or environs.... |
....is as pretty and we envy people.... |
 ....just starting their visit. |
These shed rooves keep snow off the train as it wends it's way through the mountains... |
...which are as pretty as ever! |
We come the rest of the way through...Blackfeet Country, |
Eastern Montana with it's farm paraphenalia, |
 and interesting topography. |
And the sun sets on another busy day! |
June 29: Finds us crossing land with interesting cloud formations.... |
 ...irrigation paraphenalia and more... |
 ...grain elevators. |
This familiar logo greets us too. |
At train stops, passengers get out to stretch their legs and... |
...look at the local sights. |
 |
Babies get a good airing in the arms of their mothers. |
And people 'train walk' in narrow corridors. |
The day ends at South Station, Boston where we stay all night waiting for the AM bus. Another journey is finished! |
