Black or Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly caterpillars in varioius stages of chrysalis formation
The darker the chrysalids are, the older they are (cocoons are for moths)
The pale green one had just formed and the caterpillar in upper left part of the stick is in the process of pupating

close up of the caterpillar

Oh really... Cocoons are for moths? Chrysalids for butterflies?
I am amazed at what I learn on PBase.

I am so impressed, Pete. I didn't know about the darker ones, either. I have seen so few....and this year especially. Well done!

How very interesting. Now I know what to look for. They ate my maypop vine to pieces and we had giant caterpillers, but I have not seen anything since. Thank you, I shall look. V

Well this is a petesie proud photo if ever there was one. Thanks for the nature lesson... I did not know there was a way to judge the relative age of a chrysalis. This is wonderful. I am very jealous. As I tried to explain to Petesie, my caterpillar photos are always a disaster

Caterpillars are one of my weird fears! Imagine what this image is doing to me! I can barely type! ;o)
